Every October the world comes together helping to raise awareness about early detection and treatment of Breast Cancer. As the most common cancer affecting American women, other than skin cancer, educating yourself about the disease is the first step. 

Here are ten facts about breast cancer that you should know: 

  1. In 2020, an estimated 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. 

  2. There are over 3.5 million survivors of breast cancer in the United States.

  3. Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of death in women. 


  4. This year, an estimated 42,170 women will die from breast cancer in the United States alone.

  5. An estimated 2,620 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and approximately 520 men will die. 

  6. 64% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at a localized stage, for which the 5-year survival rate is 99%. 

  7. Due to early detection and increased awareness, there has been an estimated 375,900 fewer breast cancer deaths. 


  8. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American women, except for certain skin cancers. 

  9. 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. 


  10. Men are more likely than women (51% vs. 36%) to be diagnosed with advanced breast cancer, likely due to decreased awareness.
