Posted by 3 on
With summer in full-swing, it’s a good idea to prepare yourself for a healthy and successful season. Summer may seem like the easiest season to stay healthy and happy. But there are some key daily practices that are often overlooked. No worries! We’ve compiled several health-conscious tips for you and yours to keep in mind while you enjoy this summer season.   1. Good Hydration Drink water as often as you can and not just during physical activities. Heat exhaustion and even heat stroke are a direct result of lack of fluids. Consistently sip water throughout the day to avoid any issues. Smart Tip: Buy a water bottle and bring it with you everywhere. You will subconsciously start drinking more and more water!   2. Fresh From The FarmVegetable Market What better way to take advantage of summer than picking up fresh fruits and veggies? Summer allows you access to tons of delicious natural foods that just aren’t available or in-season during the winter. Your body and mind will thank you if you make a weekly trip out to your local farmer’s market.   3. Get Out There Making your way to the gym every day is daunting, I know. Summer provides the perfect weather to shake-up your routine. Try activities that allow you to get your workout while breathing in fresh summer air. Smart Tip: On a budget? Sports that require limited equipment like running or basketball in the park will keep costs down.   4. Dodge the Sun’s Power-Hours With exercising outdoors comes the threat of the heat. The sun is most powerful between 12 and 3 PM. It’s best to avoid strenuous activity and direct sun-exposure during that time. If you have to be outdoors mid-day, be sure to drink plenty of water and take advantage of shade as much as possible!    5. They’ll Make You TickThe Castor Bean Tick (Ixodes ricinus) Unfortunately, with the summer weather you’re going to get summer insects. Ticks are often forgotten and they can have a negative effect on your body. With the threat of serious diseases, like Lyme’s disease, it’s worth it to check for ticks after outdoor activities. Smart Tip: Be sure to check your bug-spray to verify it has tick repellent as well!   6. Screen the Sun I know everyone tells you to apply plenty of sunscreen, but we still seem to fall short in actually doing it. We all know it is extremely important to apply sunscreen before going out into the sunlight. However, it is JUST as important to reapply periodically during extensive sun exposure to prevent skin-cancer and burns.    7. Take an Adult Time-Out You heard right! I am telling you to drop everything and take a vacation. You’ve earned it and so has your body. There are few better ways to boost your health, both physically and mentally, than taking a vacation. It doesn’t have to be anything expensive or fancy. You just need to get away to relax, refresh and recharge!   We’re confident these tips will help ensure a safe and healthy summer for you and your family. Feel free to share them with your friends and help promote healthy living!   By Pat DeRiso Sources: Health.com, Heart.org, WebMD.com, Health.Ri.gov
